MOBILE, Ala. -- Asbury women's tennis is the only team left on the docket for Asbury athletics for the 2015-16 season and many may have forgotten they still had a schedule left to play since they secured their first-ever bid to the NAIA Tournament back in the fall.
Way back on October 24 the Eagles upended the Grenadiers of IU-Southeast and put an end to their 17-year run as the KIAC Conference Champions. With that win the Eagles punched their ticket for the NAIA National Tournament in Mobile for the 2015-16 academic year, which was still seven months out.
That seven months has come and gone and the Eagles are ready for the school's first taste of the National Tournament experience. They'll take on the 10th-seeded Owls of William Woods (Mo.) after drawing the 23rd seed in the tournament. The opening serve for the match is set for 9:30 a.m. EST.
Asbury will set out to try to take down the Owls who are 17-2 on the season and boasting a seven match win-streak, dating back to April 13th. The Owls have an All-AMC First Team member at No. 2 doubles in Karyna Sagalai, who was 10-4 this season and four more All-AMC Second Team members. Based on their season results, it's hard to tell what line up the Owls with go with as they used a different line up in various aspects of the season but it looks like KIAC Player of the Year Caitlin Conyers will surely match up against the Owls' Paige Smith at the No. 1 singles spot. The Eagles, too, have mixed up their lineup this season.
The single elimination, tournament commences with eight first-round matchups on May 17 starting at 8:30 a.m. CDT. The top-eight seeds receive a first-round bye and begin action on May 18 at 9 a.m. The event concludes on May 21 with the championship match at 9 a.m.
