No. 2 WVU Tech routs No. 6 Brescia to advance in KIAC Tournament loser's bracket

KINGSPORT, Tenn. -- No. 2 seed WVU Tech survived its Friday afternoon loser's bracket test in a big way with a 17-3 victory over No. 6 Brescia University at the KIAC Baseball Tournament from Hunter Wright Stadium.
The Golden Bears (40-15) reached the 40-win mark and advanced to the loser's bracket final Friday night at 7 p.m. versus No. 1 IU Southeast thanks to 16 hits and Jayson Sykora's complete game.
Sykora scattered 11 hits and improved to 7-1 by limiting Brescia to just three runs over nine innings of work. He struck out four and walked one.
WVU Tech scored in six of its last seven innings with the last one being the biggest. The Golden Bears scored eight runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach for good.
Dylan Harvey was 3 for 6 with three runs, and Roy Suzuki was 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the WVU Tech offense.
It was a consisent attack for the Golden Bears with not only scoring in six of the innings but hitting up and down the lineup.
Eight different WVU Tech players had a hit, and six of them registered multi-hit games -- Harvey and Suzuki with three each and Doug Prather, Ian Southcott, Sebastian Gomez and Anferny Ellis two each.
Kyran Weemaels was the starting pitcher for Brescia and took the loss in 5.0 innings. He gave up seven runs with only four of them earned. Brescia made seven errors in the game and had a total of four pitchers see the mound.
Brescia had 11 hits of its own and had its chances. But the Bearcats left 11 men on base. They got as close as 4-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, but WVU Tech bumped things up to 7-2 the next half inning.
Brescia was eliminated from the tournament after going 1-2 with a victory in the first round of the loser's bracket that earned a spot among the final four teams left in Kingsport.
