Brescia's Whitfill named KIAC Female Athlete of the Year 2015-16
FLORENCE, Ky. -- Brescia University senior Julie Whitfill had an outstanding senior year in 2015-16, and for her efforts she was voted the KIAC Female Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Thursday.
Whitfill, a native of Hardingsburgh, Ky., starred on the basketball court as the 2015-16 KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Year and an NAIA Division II Second Team All-American.
A two-sport athlete, she also was a key member of Brescia's women's golf team and placed 10th individually in the conference championship tournament this past spring.
KIAC member schools nominate one female student-athlete each year for the KIAC Female Athlete of the Year award. The voting is cast by KIAC athletic directors.
Whitfill's senior basketball season had her lead the KIAC in scoring at 22.1 ppg, a figure that ranked fourth in NAIA Division II. The overall national leader in total scoring with 730 points on the year, she also led the KIAC and ranked fourth nationally with 117 made 3-pointers.
Other impressive stats included 89 percent free throws (third NAIA DII, 1st KIAC) and 47 percent field goals (3rd KIAC). Whitfill is Brescia's all-time leader in scoring with 2,444 career points and holds the NAIA and KIAC records for most 3-point field goals made in a game.
On the golf course, Whitfill shot rounds of 84 and 85 to place 10th at the KIAC Tournament this year and help Brescia to a second-place finish in the team standings. She led the Bearcats' women's basketball team to the KIAC Tournament semifinals.
Academically, Whitfill is a two-time NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete, which is for juniors and seniors with a 3.50+ GPA.
