Asbury (Ky.) narrowly edged by Georgetown in RSC Game of the Week Friday night

Box Score (By Zack Peñalva, AsburyEagles.com Contributing Writer)

WILMORE, Ky. – One well-taken shot is all it takes to win a game, and that's all it took for (RV) Georgetown (Ky.) College on Friday night to secure a 1-0 win over the Asbury (Ky.) University women's soccer team in the River States Conference Game of the Week.

After a slow start to the half from both teams, a Georgetown corner in the 25th minute was taken short. The proceeding shot from 18 yards was a curling effort that floated right over the hands of Asbury goalkeeper Brooke Perkins and into the side netting on the far side of the goal.

From there, the Eagles seemed to come alive more in the attack. The best chance of the half came after a cross from Laura Millis wasn't cleared by the Georgetown defense. The ball fell to Mia Wiersema, but her hard shot was deflected. Asbury's leading scorer, Emily Hubbuch, (7 goals on the season) was near the rebound but the Georgetown keeper pounced on the ball.

The teams went into halftime even, but again Asbury came out quicker to start the second period. Hubbuch had a good run down the right side of the field, one of many she would go on to make throughout the half, but the final ball was never able to find a teammate in the box.

If the Eagles were going to score, there best chance came in the 80 minute after a corner was sent into the box from the left side of the field. It was bobbled around in the air before falling towards Wiersema, but she was forced to snap at a volley that went well over the goal.

The loss means the Eagles go to 4-3-1 on the season. Georgetown, who are receiving votes (RV) toward the top-25 NAIA poll improved to 6-2-1 on the season.

Asbury will play their first conference game on Sept. 29 when they travel to Point Park University for the first River States Conference game in school history. This summer the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference changed its name to River States Conference.
