NAIA DIVISION II TOP 25 POLL (JAN. 10):
The latest ediition of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Top 25 Coaches' Poll came out this past Tuesday, Jan. 10, and it features three teams from the RSC among the top 28 teams in the nation. It was the first poll since before the semester break last released on Dec. 13.
IU East continues to lead the way for the conference ranked No. 11 this week at 14-5 overall and 5-1 RSC. The Red Wolves have a win over then-No. 2 St. Francis (Ind.) since the previous poll came out.
WVU Tech (12-5, 5-1 RSC) moved into the rankings at No. 25 this week with eight wins in its last nine games. That includes conference victories over then-No. 10 IU East and then-No. 18 IU Southeast, both at home.
IU Southeast (12-4, 6-1 RSC) had a hiccup with its loss at WVU Tech last Friday but has since won two more road games in a road to take further control of the lead in the RSC West Division. The Grenadiers are "receiving votes" in this week's Top 25 and come in at No. 28 overall.
NEWS AND NOTES JAN. 6-12 RESULTS
- WVU Tech continued to move up the RSC East Division standings with home wins over IU Southeast (87-67) and Brescia (100-61) last weekend Jan. 6-7. The Golden Bears moved into a tie with IU East atop the division at 5-1 RSC.
- IU East kept pace in the RSC East with its only game of the last week, a 71-67 victory at Alice Lloyd.
- Point Park is 4-2 RSC and 1.0 game out of first in the RSC East after bouncing back for an OT home win over IU Kokomo on Saturday. The Pioneers lost at home to Midway the night before Friday.
- Ohio Chistian (2-3 RSC) and Carlow (2-3) have gotten back in the east divisional race by picking up wins this past week, and Rio Grande (2-4 RSC) split its home game last weekend.
- IU Southeast went 4-1 on its recent conference road trip, including wins at Rio Grande (95-59) and IU Kokomo (101-67) over the last week. The Grenadiers lead the RSC West Division by 2.0 games.
- Cincinnati Christian was off last weekend and hasn't played since Jan. 3, but the Eagles are in solo second in the RSC West at 3-2 RSC. CCU won its last game 112-83 over Point Park.
- IU Kokomo (4-3 RSC) and Asbury (4-4 RSC) fill out the rest of the current playoff picture of the top four teams in the RSC West. IU Kokomo has lost two in a row, and Asbury has won two in a row over the past week.
RSC STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Marquis Jackson of Ohio Christian is averaging a conference-best 24.4 ppg to lead four players in the league at 20+ ppg. Trenton Thompson of Asbury comes in at 21.6 ppg followed by Trent Elliot of IU Kokomo at 21.4 ppg and Ryan Atkins of WVU Tech at 21.1 ppg.
- Aaron Thomas (IU East) is the RSC rebounding leaderat 9.3 rpg. Gary Hoover (OCU) is second at 9.1 rpg and first in field-goal percentage at .618.
- OCU's Jackson also leads the RSC in assists (5.7 apg), steals (2.2 spg) and made 3-point field goals (74).
WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Divisional matchups make up the weekend schedule with three games on Friday night and six more on Saturday. Twelve of the 13 conference teams are in action this weekend with the exception of Asbury, which won at home over Alice Lloyd on Thursday night.
Point Park and Carlow visit IU East and Ohio Christian on Friday and Saturday. The other RSC East matchup of the weekend is No. 25 WVU Tech at Rio Grande on Saturday.
Cincinnati Christian has a two-game road trip at Brescia Friday night and then at (RV) IU Southeast Saturday at 3 p.m. for a game that is designated as the RSC Game of the Week. IU Kokomo at Brescia and Midway at Alice Lloyd round out the weekend schedule Saturday at 4 p.m.
