RSC Women's Basketball Weekly Report: Week 6 -- Jan. 12, 2017 #RSCWBB #RSC
FLORENCE, Ky. -- The River States Conference Women's Basketball Weekly Report for Week 6 takes a look at things as they begin to take shape within the conference standings. Check RiverStatesConference.com for this weekly feature.
NAIA DIVISION II TOP 25 POLL (JAN. 10):
The first NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Top 25 Poll since Dec. 13 came out this past Tuesday, Jan. 10 and had two teams from the River States Conference mentioned. IU East (14-4, 5-0 RSC) remained at No. 21 in the nation and continued to lead the conference. Point Park (15-4, 5-1 RSC) is once again "receiving votes" and is rated No. 29 overall in the country.
IU East has won four in a row and 10 of its last 11 to stay in the national rankings. The Red Wolves lead the RSC East Division by a half game over Point Park. The Pioneers will play at the Red Wolves on Friday night in the RSC Game of the Week.
The next Top 25 Poll comes out Jan. 24 with rankings to be released every two weeks for the rest of the season. For the complete NAIA DII WBB Top 25 Poll, click here.
NEWS AND NOTES JAN. 6-12 RESULTS
- Midway University had the biggest week in conference play with the Eagles picking up three road victories to lift up to 14-5 overall, 5-2 RSC for second place in the RSC West Division. Midway won at Point Park, Carlow and Asbury over the last seven days.
- IU Kokomo (13-6, 6-1 RSC) leads the RSC West after spliting two games since last weekend. The Cougars lost at Point Park Saturday but returned home to beat IU Southeast in a key divisional game on Tuesday.
- IU Southeast (8-8, 3-4 RSC) is third in the west after its three-game road trip included a win at WVU Tech (Friday) and losses at Rio Grande (Saturday) and IU Kokomo (Tuesday).
- IU East (14-4, 5-0 RSC) won its only game of the last week at Alice Lloyd on Saturday to stay undefeated and in first place in the RSC East Division heading into this weekend.
- Point Park (15-4, 5-1 RSC) dropped from the conference unbeatens with Friday's home loss to Midway but rebounded with the win over IU Kokomo the next day.
- Rio Grande had a big weekend winning home games over Brescia and IU Southeast to improve to 12-6 overall, 4-2 RSC. The RedStorm has won six in a row, including three straight conference games.
- WVU Tech (3-3) and Ohio Christian (2-3 RSC) picked up victories last Saturday over Brescia and Asbury, respectively, which put the RSC East Division at 5-1 versus the West on the day.
RSC STATISTICAL LEADERS
- Tia King of No. 21 IU East is the leading scorer in the conference with 18.6 ppg. Brittany Warren of Asbury is next at 17.4 ppg. Newcomer Breanna Ball of Midway is third averaging 14.0 ppg.
- Kali Whiteside (Asbury) and Emma Stille (Carlow) continue lead the conference in rebounding at 12.8 rpg and 11.1 rpg.
- Annie Thomas (IU Southeast) leads in assists at 4.2 apg.
- Shelby Samsil (Brescia) has made a conference-best 59 treys to lead the RSC.
WEEKEND OUTLOOK
Divisional play is involved in all nine games coming up this weekend with three on Friday night and six more on Saturday. Twelve teams are in action on the weekend. Asbury has the weekend off after picking up a home win over Alice Lloyd on Thursday.
Friday night's games are highlighted by (RV) Point Park at No. 21 IU East (6 pm) for the RSC Game of the Week. Point Park and Carlow visit IU East and Ohio Christian this weekend with IU East and Ohio Christian switching opponents each day. The other RSC East Division matchup has WVU Tech at Rio Grande on Saturday.
Cincinnati Christian visits Brescia on Friday and IU Southeast on Saturday for a pair of RSC West games. The top teams in the West go on the road Saturday with IU Kokomo at Brescia and Midway at Alice Lloyd.
