WVU Tech advances to NAIA National Championship Opening Round as RSC Tournament champion.
NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- The 2017 River States Conference Men's Soccer Tournament qualifiers and bracket are set with playoff competition to take place Nov. 4, 8, 11 at campus sites around the conference.
The higher seed will host each game, and the top six teams in the standings qualified for the tournament. The No. 1 and 2 seeds received byes into the semifinals Nov. 8 with quarterfinal action beginning Nov. 4. The RSC Tournament championship game will be Nov. 11 hosted by the highest remaining seed. The tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
No. 1 seed University of Rio Grande (14-1-1, 8-0-1) is once again the RSC regular-season champion and is ranked No. 3 nationally in the NAIA. The RedStorm is first in the country in shots per game and was unbeaten in conference play. Rio Grande will await its opponent in the conference semifinals, a game it will host Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
No. 2 seed Midway (Ky.) University (9-5-1, 6-2-1 RSC) won its final five conference games to take the second seed and earn a bye. The Eagles are hosting a semifinal game Nov. 8 at 3 p.m. for a spot in the championship round. Midway is in its second year of men's soccer history.
No. 3 Asbury (Ky.) University (11-5-1, 6-2-1 RSC) notched some big conference wins throughout the season to claim the No. 3 seed in a crowded race. The Eagles earned a quarterfinal home game with that, and they will welcome No. 6 IU East (8-8-2, 3-5-1 RSC) on Nov. 4 at 2 p.m., a game that has been moved to IU East in its first year as a program, was .500 overall on the season and registered a big tie versus highly ranked Rio Grande.
No. 4 WVU Tech (7-9-2, 6-2-1 RSC) was the third of the three times tied at 6-2-1 RSC and gets the No. 4 seed. The Golden Bears played five ranked teams this year, and they host No. 5 seed Point Park (Pa.) University (11-5, 6-3 RSC) in a quarterfinal game on Nov. 4 at 6 p.m. Point Park is also one of five RSC teams with at least six conference wins, and it lost, 3-2, to WVU Tech in the regular season.
