Point Park wins RSC Women's XC title, leads NAIA national qualifiers from conference

FINAL RESULTS

WILMORE, Ky. -- Point Park University claimed the team title at the 2017 River States Conference Women's Cross Country Championship held Saturday, Nov. 4 at Asbury (Ky.) University. The Pioneers topped the field of 12 conference teams and qualifies for the NAIA Women's Cross Country National Championship Nov. 18 in Vancouver, Wash., along with RSC runner-up Ohio Christian University.

The top two teams in the final standings were the NAIA national qualifiers from the conference. The top six individual finishers not from Point Park or Ohio Christian also qualified for nationals individually. The top 14 finishers earned All-River States Conference honors with the top seven on the first team and the next seven on the second team. There was also an RSC Champions of Character Team selected.

Point Park junior Anna Shields led the Pioneers to the team championship by placing first individually with a time of 18:22 in the 5,000-meter race. All five of the Pioneers' scorers earned all-conference honors with Point Park's fifth runner placing 14th at 21:00. Point Park had 46 points in the team standings.

Ohio Christian took second place with 74 points and two of the top four finishers. Ariel Young placed second overall at 18:39, and Raven Arellano took fourth at 19:09. The Trailblazers had three all-conference honorees including Alyssa Turrentine in 13th place at 20:55.

Asbury (Ky.) University placed third with 100 points as meet host. University of Rio Grande (Ohio) placed fourth with 102 points followed by IU Kokomo in fifth with 122 points and IU East in sixth with 150 points. Click the link above for complete team standings.

The RSC's individual NAIA qualifiers came from four different schools with IU Kokomo and Rio Grande having two each followed by one each from Asbury and IU East. The individual qualifiers include IU Kokomo's Taryn Thor (19:00, 3rd) and Brittany Sloan (19:43, 6th), Rio Grande's Lucy Williams (19:35, 5th) and Maggie Dellinger (20:05, 7th), Asbury's Allison Lyon (20:20, 8th) and IU East's Ashley Toschlog (20:35, 11th).
