Rio Grande's Martinez picks up RSC Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week
FLORENCE, Ky. -- University of Rio Grande's Benjamin Martinez qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 600 meters and thus picked up River States Conference Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week for Feb. 13-19.
At the University of Findlay Meet Feb. 17, Martinez ran the 600 meters in 1:22.38 to register the NAIA 'B' qualifying standard for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship.
He finished first at the meet while breaking his own school record in the 600. He also competed in the 4x400 relay, which registered its best time ever. Martinez, a sophomore from Montpellier, France, is also an NAIA All-American goalkeeper for the Rio Grande men's soccer team.
The next competition for the RedStorm is the NAIA indoor national meet March 2-4 at Johnson City, Tenn.
