FLORENCE, Ky. -- With the completion of the 2016-17 winter sports season, IU East has overtaken the lead in the River States Conference Commissioner's All-Sports Cup standings. The Red Wolves finished in first place in women's basketball and second overall in men's basketball to assume the lead two-thirds of the way through the academic year.

The RSC Commissioner's All-Sports Cup measures the top overall athletic department in the conference based on combined finish in all sports. The overall winner for the 2016-17 school year will be announced at the end of the year after the completion of all 15 RSC championship sports.

The winter 2016-17 sports season included RSC two sports -- men's and women's basketball. For the sport of basketball and others like it that have regular-season standings, the RSC Cup standings are tabulated based on regular-season finish.

The RSC Cup standings are based on a 10-point scoring system. First place in a sport earns 10 points, second place earns nine and so on. For sports that have more than 10 schools competing, no points are earned for schools finishing below 10th place. Each school's point total is divided by the number of championship sports sponsored by that school, which produces an average point total of each sport out of 10.

For the purposes of the current standings, sports that have been completed in the fall and winter seasons are factored into the scoring so far.

IU East not only took over the top spot after the basketball season, it also experienced the biggest jump in the standings. The Red Wolves now have 37 points for an average of 7.4 points per each of its five sports so far.

The Red Wolves were in fifth place after the fall but bumped up four spots after their women's basketball team won the RSC regular-season championship and their men's basketball team was second overall in the conference and RSC East Division champs. Both IU East basketball teams won the RSC Tournament titles.

IU Southeast is in second place after the basketball season and has moved up from fourth place. This is after the Grenadiers took the top points in men's basketball with the RSC regular-season championship. IU Southeast has an average score of 7.3 with 22 points in its three sports thus far. The Grenadiers' women's basketball team was third place in the RSC West Division.

University of Rio Grande is in third place after the winter with an average of 7.1. The RedStorm has the most points in the conference with a total of 50 in its seven sports. Rio Grande had both of its basketball teams make the playoffs.

Asbury University is in fourth place after the winter with an average of 6.9, meaning that the top four schools in the current standings are separated by just half a point (0.5). Asbury has 48 points in its seven sports and had both basketball teams in the postseason.

An average of just over 1.0 point separates the next four schools in the standings with Ohio Christian University (6.1 average) in fifth, Point Park University (5.7 average) in sixth, WVU Tech (5.7 average) in seventh and IU Kokomo (5.0 average) in eighth. Aside from IU East moving up four sports, Ohio Christian's move up three spots was the next highest jump from the fall.

The final five schools in the current standings are Midway University (3.8), Cincinnati Christian University (3.1), Brescia University (2.6), Carlow (1.9) and Alice Lloyd (1.5).
