Day 1 Recap: Asbury (Ky.) leads River States Conference Men's Golf Tournament by two

UNION, Ky. -- Day 1 of the River States Conference Men's Golf Tournament is in the books with Asbury University leading the team standings by two shots over the other 10 teams and the Eagles' Matthew McCurry leading individually after 27 holes played on Monday. The 54-hole tournament continues Tuesday with the second 9 of round two and final round of 18 holes. The tournament is being held at Lassing Pointe Golf Course in Union, Ky.
Monday's action included the first round of 18 holes and then the first 9 of the second round. Asbury (Ky.) was in second place after the first round trailing Point Park University by a stroke. But the Eagles have a two-shot lead over the Pioneers in the middle of the second round, the midway point of the tournament.
The top three teams through 27 holes are separated by just five strokes. Asbury is 29-over par after firing a team score of 307 in the first round and playing the front 9 in 6-over as a team so far in the second round. Point Park is two shots back at 31-over par through 27 holes after a 306 in the first round followed by playing the back 9 in 9-over for round two.
Midway University is just five shots off the lead as it opened with a 307 to tie with Asbury after 18 holes. Midway is 11-over par so far in the second round and stands at 34-over par after Day 1. Like Point Park, Midway played the back 9 for its extra nine holes on Monday. The back 9 is a par 36 compared to a par 35 on the front that Asbury played a second time.
Cincinnati Christian is in fourth place at 42-over par after Day 1. CCU and the next three teams are separated by just five shots with IU East in fifth place at 43-over, Brescia in sixth place at 46-over and WVU Tech in seventh place at 47-over par. IU Kokomo, Ohio Christian, Alice Lloyd and Carlow round on the 11 teams in the standings.
Asbury's McCurry is 1-over par for the tournament to lead the individual standings. He fired a 2-over 73 in the first round and is 1-under so far in round two after a couple of birdies on the front side.
Point Park's Max Kaminsky and Gino DiPardo are tied for second place at 2-over par. Kaminsky shot a 72 in round one, and he birdied his final hole on Monday. DiPardo opened with a 73 and is even-par so far in round two with an eagle on his card for hole No. 16.
CCU's Taylor Suggs was the first-round leader with an even-par 71 on the first 18 holes. He is at 3-over for the tournament and in fourth place. IU East's Tyler Pearson is in fifth place at 4-over through 27 holes. He was tied for second place after firing four birdies on his way to 72 in the first round. Midway's Granville Hayes is in sixth place at 5-over. He opened with a 74.
