PITTSBURGH -- No. 19 University of Rio Grande visits Point Park University for the River States Conference Softball Games of the Week on Friday, April 21. The doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. and is a matchup of the top two teams in the current league standings.
Rio Grande (34-6, 12-0 RSC) has won an impressive 23 games in a row and is unbeaten in its 12 conference games thus far. The RedStorm has won the conference tournament title the last two years and is once again out in front of the standings with two weeks to go.
Point Park (17-14, 8-2 RSC) has won four straight conference games to bump its standing up to second place in the RSC. The Pioneers lost a doubleheader at Midway early on in conference play but has taken care of business in its conference games since.
Friday's matchup pits the top two teams in the conference in terms of pitching and defense. Rio Grande has a team ERA of 1.93 to lead the league followed by Point Park second at 2.18. The teams are even in opponent's batting average and tied for the RSC lead at .217 in that category. Finally, Rio Grande's fielding percentage of .970 is tops in the conference and just ahead of Point Park at .965.
Rio Grande is also the top hitting team in the league coming in with a .339 team batting average. Point Park is fourth in that department hitting .299 as a team.
The RedStorm's pitcthing staff has Kelsey Conkey (15-1, 0.95 ERA) and Jenna Jones (9-3, 1.55 ERA) leading the way. Michaela Criner (.485, 3 HR, 29 RBIs) and Carly Skeese (.355, 11 HR, 46 RBIs) are top hitters.
Point Park's staff has Ashley Iagnemma (8-5, 1.40 ERA) and Tiffany Edwards (6-6, 2.02 ERA) as the top arms. Becca Babincak (.412) leads in hitting along with Kim Corcoran (.382, 6 HR, 30 RBIs).
