Asbury (Ky.) repeats as RSC Women's Tennis Tournament champions

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. -- Asbury (Ky.) University is the conference champion in women's tennis once again as the Eagles won the 2017 River States Conference Women's Tennis Tournament conducted April 28-29 at the Freeman Lake Tennis Complex in Elizabethtown, Ky. No. 1 seed Asbury topped No. 3 IU East in the championship final played Saturday, 5-0.

Asbury (13-3, 6-0 RSC), which is "receiving votes" in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, advances to the NAIA Women's Tennis National Championship May 16-20 in Mobile, Ala., as the conference's automatic qualifier and tournament champs. The Eagles also won the conference title a year ago, and they went a perfect 2-0 in this year's tournament.

Asbury's 5-0 win over IU East in the championship final had the Eagles win all three doubles matches and then take the first two singles matches to clinch the victory. Asbury's Caitlin Conyers won at No. 1 singles over IU East's Morgan Jackson, 6-2, 6-4. The No. 2 singles matchup had the Eagles' Alejandra Diaz top the Red Wolves' Kaylin Venezia, 6-3, 6-0.

Conyers and Diaz teammed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat IU East's Jackson and Krystal Schmidt, 8-4. Asbury's Sara Beth Alford and Laura Ross won at No. 2 doubles over Venezia and Brooklyn Hubbard, 8-4. In No. 3 doubles, Emily Ross and Alex LoPrinzi beat Bri Ayres and Sally Wilhoite, 8-4.

IU East (13-12, 5-1 RSC) went 2-1 in the tournament and reached the championship final after opening up with a 6-0 win over No. 6 Alice Lloyd (Ky.) in the first round and a 5-2, upset victory over No. 2 IU Southeast in the semifinals on Friday.
