No. 17 Rio Grande takes No. 2 seed in Grand Rapids for NAIA Softball Opening Round
RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- River States Conference Softball Tournament and Regular-Season champion University of Rio Grande has claimed the No. 2 seed in the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Bracket of the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round, which will begin May 15 around the country.
The RedStorm, ranked No. 17 in the final NAIA Softball Top 25 Poll and owning a record of 45-8 overall, are one of four teams at the Grand Rapids Bracket. Rio Grande opens the tournament Monday, May 15 at 12 p.m. ET versus No. 4 seed Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) (31-12), which is "receiving votes" nationally. No. 1 seed Davenport (Mich.) is hosting the bracket and is ranked No. 8 in the NAIA. The Panthers are 43-7 overall and face No. 4 seed Hastings (Neb.) (36-22) at 3 p.m.
The Grand Rapids Bracket is one of 10 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round sites around the nation. The 10 bracket winners will advance to the NAIA Softball World Series May 28-June 2 at Clermont, Fla. The Grand Rapids Bracket continues on Tuesday, May 16 with the winner's bracket game and a couple of elimination games. The championship round is Wednesday, May 17.
