HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The IU Southeast softball team dropped a 5-1 decision to No. 7-ranked and host William Carey in the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round Hattiesburg (Miss.) Bracket on Monday.

William Carey (43-9), the No. 1 seed in the bracket, struck first in the third inning. Maddie Probus couldn't handle a bad hop on a ground ball off the bat of Kaitlyn Thompson which allowed Kamryn Theriot to score.

The Crusaders put the game away in the fourth. With runners at second and third and no outs, Mary Blair Odom hit a ground ball to third where Probus tagged out the runner at third but Sydney Seger could not make the catch at first to complete a double play. After a walk to Theriot to load the bases, Harli Crow tripled to left to clear the bases. Kimberly Gilbert singled to center to score Crow to make it 5-0.

The Grenadiers, the No. 4 seed, threatened in the seventh. Sydney Seger and Becca Schoenung opened the inning with back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third on a passed ball.
