SILVIS, Ill. -- The NAIA Men's Golf National Championship began Tuesday with the first round from TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. Competing in the 72-hole tournament are River States Conference Tournament champion Point Park (Pa.) University and RSC medalist Matthew McCurry of Asbury (Ky.) University.
After 18 holes, McCurry was tied for 45th place in the 156-player tournament. That was after shooting 5-over 76 on the PGA-Tour course. TPC Deere Run is site of the annual John Deere Classic. McCurry played his final nine holes at even par on Tuesday and thus finds himself right within the projected cut line after 18 holes.
Point Park carded a team score of 340 and stood in 29th place after the first round. Max Kaminsky led the Pioneers with an 82. Play continues for the Pioneers and also McCurry in the second round Wednesday, with both scheduled to tee off at 8:40 a.m. CT from hole No. 1. The tournament field will be cut after 54 holes with 36 more holes for the RSC contingent to make their case.
