McCurry, Point Park fall outside of early cut at NAIA Men's Golf National Championship

RD 2 LEADERBOARD

SILVIS, Ill. -- Asbury (Ky.) University's Matthew McCurry led the River States Conference contingent at the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship being held this week at TPC Deere Run in Silvis., Ill. The junior from the Eagles placed tied for 76th in the 156-player field, which is hosted by the site of the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic.

McCurry, the RSC individual medalist, and Point Park (Pa.) University, the RSC Tournament champion, were both on the outside of the cut that was made afer 36 holes. The cut came 18 holes earlier than was planned for originally after 54 holes. But bad weather on Wednesday forced the second round to be suspended with many teams unable to get through 36 holes after two days.

The NAIA informed coaches late Wednesday night that the second round would be completed Thursday morning at 7:30 a.m. CT and that the cut would be made when that was achieved. The tournament will continue for the final 36 holes with only the top 17 teams and top 40 players and ties moving on.

For McCurry, he ended up four shots off the cutline of 12-over par. He opened up with a 5-over 76 to put himself right around the cut after Tuesday's first round. McCurry then shot an 82 in the second round to find himself outside of contention.

Point Park finished in 29th place after shooting team scores of 340 and 335. The Pioneers had Max Kaminsky lead the way shooting 82-83. Jared Bender led the Pioneers in the second round with an 80.

Point Park was competing in the NAIA national tournament for the fourth time in the last five years and its fifth time overall. The Pioneers had two juniors and three sophomores in the starting lineup this week.
