PALM BEACH, Fla. – While in the midst of finishing their first round, the Midway University women's golf team will have to wait until Wednesday morning to finish their first round after the 2017 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship first round was postponed.
The Eagles are one of 12 teams that will be forced to finish their first round on Wednesday morning starting at 7:15 a.m. ET at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Rain forced a nearly an hour and a half-long delay in the evening and ultimately caused a postponement of play with more storms and darkness rolling in. Along with the storms approaching, golfers also faced winds that picked up throughout the afternoon.
Unfortunately for Midway, they teed off in the afternoon wave and were forced to deal with winds that picked up throughout the afternoon. The Eagles got their round off to a great start, but their scores began to rise as the wind did late in the afternoon.
With three scores in and two more left to finish, the Eagles sit in 25th place at 51-over par. They are one of 10 teams that sit within 10 shots of each other on the leaderboard.
The junior duo of Kathryn Lawler (Georgetown, Ky.) and Chelsea Schack (Alexandria, Ky.) are Midway's two players that will finish their first round in the morning.
With three holes remaining for each player, Lawler currently has a 64, while Schack has a 15-hole score of 73.
The trio of Rylee Beard (Campbellsville, Ky.), Hannah Scroggins (Williamstown, Ky.) and Amanda Cox (Willisburg, Ky.) have all completed their first rounds.
Beard finished her first round with a 90 (43-47), Scroggins shot an 88 (40-48), while Cox carded a 92 (46-46) in the first round.
Oklahoma City University leads the field after shooting a 306 in the first round. The Stars were one of 18 teams that completed their first round.
Courtney Dye of Indiana Tech University and Aleesha Smith of William Carey (Miss.) finished the day tied for first after recording a 72.
Both Lawler and Schack will finish their respective first round at 7:15 a.m. ET on Wednesday morning. The Eagles will then begin their second round at 8:15 a.m. ET.
