#5 WVU Tech rallies past #6 Brescia to advance in #RSCBASEBALL Tournament

BOX SCORE

CHILLICOTHE, Ohio -- No. 5 seed WVU Tech scored the final three runs of the game to rally past No. 6 Brescia (Ky.), 5-4, in an elimination game Sunday at the River States Conference Baseball Tournament. The Golden Bears advanced in the loser's bracket of the tournament being played at VA Memorial Stadium. Brescia was eliminated.

Brescia built a 4-2 lead after batting in the top of the fourth, but WVU Tech put up single tallies in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to go out in front. That lead held up with winning pitcher Chris Davidson staying the course after some early runs by Brescia. Davidson went all 9.0 innings, struck out eight, walked one and gave up eight hits for WVU Tech.

WVU Tech's Alex Kotheimer lifted a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to bring home the eventual winning run. It was all Davidson needed as he gave up just three more hits the rest of the way after Brescia went ahead 4-2 after its first four times at bat.

The Golden Bears out-hit Brescia, 11-10, with Doug Prather, Tanner Levine and Trevor Lam collecting two hits a piece. Josh Wetzel led the hitting for Brescia going 3 for 5, and teammate Zach Johnson was 2 for 5.

Brescia used three pitchers with Hunter Kloke tossing the first four innings, giving up six hits, striking out four and walking none. He handed the lead over to Zack McDonald for an inning. Tyler Solomon threw the final three innings scoreless to keep the score at 5-4, but Brescia could not muster the tying or go-ahead runs.

WVU Tech survived to face No. 3 Rio Grande in another elimination game, which will be Monday at 3 p.m. The winner will advance to the championship round on Tuesday beginning at 11 a.m. Rio Grande survived elimination itself with a 5-0 win over No. 1 Point Park on Sunday.
