IU East wins RSC Women's Golf Fall Preview, Nowak takes medalist honors

FLORENCE, Ind. -- IU East held off Asbury (Ky.) University and won the team title at the River States Conference Women's Golf Fall Preview, which had the final round played on Tuesday (Oct. 9). The 36-hole tournament began Monday and was held at Belterra Golf Course in Florence, Ind.

IU East shot a final-round team score of 339 to beat Asbury by four strokes in the final standings. IU East opened up with a 330 on Monday to build a lead of 11 shots. Asbury, which shot 341 in the first round, put together a round of 332 over the final 18 holes, but IU East held on for the wire-to-wire win.

The top four teams in the standings remained the same after both rounds. Midway (Ky.) University placed third with a scorecard of 344-341, and IU Kokomo was fourth at 371-360.

Brescia (Ky.) University (391-368) and Point Park (Pa.) University (393-380) both moved up one spot in the final round to finish in fifth and sixth place, respectively. Cincinnati Christian University, University of Rio Grande and Carlow (Pa.) University rounded out the nine-team event in order.

IU East's Breanna Nowak, the first-round leader, won medalist honors as the first-place individual. She fired a 1-over 72 for the low round of the tournament on Monday. She held on for a two-shot win over Point Park's Joey Walz with an 85 on Tuesday. Walz (83-76) shot the low score of the final round with a 76.

Asbury had Faith Wiley (81-79) finish three shots off the lead and place third. In a tie for fourth place and four shots behind Nowak were Asbury's Hannah McCrabb (81-80) and Midway's Hannah Scroggins (78-83). IU Kokomo was led by Brandi Jones (85-84), who placed seventh overall.

This week's event served as a preview to the RSC Championship, which will be held at the same course during the spring season. The RSC Championship will be April 28-30, 2019 back at Belterra Golf Course.
