UNION, Ky. -- The first round of the 2018 River States Conference Women's Golf Tournament is complete, and Midway (Ky.) University leads the field of nine schools by 23 strokes after 18 holes played on Monday. The tournament is being held at Lassing Pointe Golf Course in Union, Ky. The final round of 18 holes is scheduled to begin on Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Conditions were brutally tough with snow delaying the start of the first round to 1 p.m. ET and shortening the tournament from 54 holes to 36 holes, the minimum needed to conduct the championship. The snow stuck around when play began, and players had to contend with that as well as 20-25 mile per hour winds throughout the day. There was also sleet and rain at various points.
Midway shot a team score of 344 to take a big lead after 18 holes. The Eagles had four scores posted in the 80s, and there were a total of eight players in the tournament who broke 90 in the first round. IU East and IU Kokomo are tied for second place after each shooting 367.
Asbury (Ky.) University is in fourth place at 373 followed by Brescia (Ky.) University at 398. Point Park (Pa.) University (442), Ohio Christian University (515) and University of Rio Grande (524) posted full team scores as well. Carlow (Pa.) University had a score of 446 with three players.
The individual leaderboard has three players tied at the top with a 13-over par score of 85 -- Midway's Kathryn Lawler and Rylee Beard and IU East's Breanna Nowak. Four players are two shots back with an 87 on the 5,808-yard, par 72 course.
The RSC Tournament team champion and individual medalist will ean an automatic bid to the NAIA Women's National Championship May 22-25 at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
