RSC Men's Golf Championship Day 1 Recap: Midway the 18-hole leader by 2 shots
**UPDATE (Tuesday at 6:00 pm ET)**: Brescia (Ky.) University has won the 2018 RSC Men's Golf Championship after a tournament-best score of 306 in the final round. The Bearcats won by 12 shots over runner-up Asbury (Ky.) University, and both of those teams advance to the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship May 15-18. CCU's Austin Taylor won in a playoff over Midway's Austin Mitchell to win individual medalist honors and qualifies for the NAIA national tournament as well.
TOURNAMENT SCORING -- GOLFSTAT
UNION, Ky. -- Day 1 of the 2018 River States Conference Men's Golf Championship is in the books with 27 holes completed by the 12 teams battling for the conference title. The tournament is at the halfway point with 27 more holes on tap Tuesday at Lassing Pointe Golf Course beginning at 8:30 a.m.
With all scores in for the first 18 holes, Midway (Ky.) University was leading by two shots over the rest of the field with a team score of 314. WVU Tech was two shots back with a 316 followed by Ohio Christian University at 317. Rounding out the top half of the team standings was IU East in fourth place with a 319 and Asbury (Ky.) University and IU Kokomo tied for fifth at 320.
The individual leader after 18 holes was WVU Tech's Kieran Samarakoon, who shot a 3-over 74 in the first round. Three players were one shot back with a 75 with those being Taylor Fletcher of IU Kokomo, Austin Mitchell of Midway and Jarod Lemaster of Rio Grande.
Although the teams played 27 holes on Monday to make their way halfway through the second round, the second-round scores were not official as the first day came to a close. The top two teams in the final standings will advance to the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship as conference tournaments that have at least 12 teams competing earn two bids to the national tournament. The individual medalist will also advance to the national tourney, which will begin May 15 at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill.
