Rio Grande wins RSC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship for 2018

FINAL RESULTS

PITTSBURGH -- University of Rio Grande won its fourth straight conference title when it placed first at the River States Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Friday. The RedStorm came out on top once again at the event held at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh and hosted by Point Park University.

The RedStorm scored 201 points to lead the field of eight teams. It was an 11-point victory for Rio Grande as runner-up Point Park came close with 190 points. It was the fourth year in a row that Rio Grande was first and Point Park was second.

WVU Tech scored 107 points for third place followed by Ohio Christian University in fourth at 76 points. IU East placed fifth with 52 points, Brescia was sixth with 31, Carlow was seventh at 12 points, and IU Kokomo scored two points for eighth place.

Rio Grande's big award winners led it to victory. Freshman sprinter Tellis Horne was named the RSC Men's Outstanding Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year and the RSC Men's Track & Field Newcomer of the Year. He was responsible for 25 points after winning the 100 and 200 and anchoring the RedStorm victories in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. The 4x100 relay met the NAIA national qualifying standard at the meet.

Rio Grande's William Messer scored big points in the field and was named the RSC Men's Outstanding Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. He scored 36 points with first place in the pole vault and javelin, third place in the 110 hurdles and high jump and fourth in the triple jump.

RedStorm head coach Bob Willey was named the RSC Men's Track & Field Coach of the Year after leading Rio Grande to another conference win.
