Point Park claims RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship in 2018
FINAL RESULTS
PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University claimed its first outdoor title as it placed first at the River States Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship held on Friday at the RMU Island Sports Center in Pittsburgh. The Pioneers hosted the event and came out on top in the eight-team event.
The Pioneers scored 210 points for the big victory. University of Rio Grande placed second with 166 points followed by Ohio Christian in third with 151 points. Point Park had finished runner-up the last three years but earned its first outdoor conference championship, which goes along with its first indoor championship this past winter.
Carlow University was fourth with 45 points,WVU Tech placed fifth with 27, and IU East was sixth with 26 points. IU Kokomo scored 14 points, and Brescia scored 12 for seventh and eighth place.
Point Park's Anna Shields claimed a well-earned honor for RSC Women's Outstanding Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. She ran in six events with all six of them coming in first place. She earned 45 points herself and was a part of the Pioneers winning 60 points in six events. Shields claimed individual titles in the 400, 800, 1,500 and 5,000, and she led the Pioneers to victories in the 4x400 and 4x800 relays. Her leg of the 4x400, the third leg, took Point Park from fourth to first.
Point Park head coach Kelly Parsley was chosen as the RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year for leading the Pioneers to the win. The Pioneers have swept the women's indoor and outdoor championships this year in their fourth years as a program.
Rio Grande's Katie Browning scored 32 points on her way to becoming the RSC Women's Outstanding Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year. She won the pole vault, placed second in the high jump and long jump and also scored in the 100 and 400. She ran five events overall.
Rio Grande freshman Madi Oiler ran five events as well and was named RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Newcomer of the Year. She placed first in the 400 hurdles, was second in the 100 and fourth in the 100 hurdles to highlight her day.
Another strong performer was Ohio Christian's Zarria Williams, who scored 34.50 points and won three events. Competing in five events overall, she was first in the 100, 200 and long jump and ran two relays.
The following are the final team standings, the individual award winners and the RSC Women's Track & Field Champions of Character Team. The top three finishers in each event were named all-conference. The top six placements scored points for their teams. Click the results link above for the compete results.
