MASON, Ohio - The Asbury (Ky.) University men's tennis team repeated as River States Conference tournament champion with a 5-0 win against Indiana University Southeast on April 28 in the conference championship match.
Asbury (15-1) and IU Southeast (10-10) met in the RSC tournament championship match for the fifth consecutive year.
The Eagles quickly took command with speedy victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Asbury's No. 1 doubles team of Julian Tellez and RSC Player of the Year Joshua Turnquest faced a match point down 7-6 at No. 1 doubles, but rallied to win 9-7 and give the Eagles a 3-0 lead heading into singles play.
Tanner Sparks won at No. 6 singles and Luiz Hartkopf was victorious at No. 4 singles to clinch the team win for the Eagles. Asbury led on three of the other remaining courts when play was halted.
Asbury, which is No. 19 in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches Poll, advances to the NAIA Tennis National Championships in Mobile, Ala., starting May 15.
The RSC tournament was played at the Lindner Family Tennis Center, site of the Western & Southern Open professional tennis tournament.
