NO. 4 IU KOKOMO 11, NO. 3 RIO GRANDE 3 -- Box Score

No. 4 IU Kokomo made its RSC Tournament debut with an 11-3 win over No. 3 Rio Grande in the final game of Day 1 Thursday night. The Cougars are in their first year competing as a program, and they had a lot of big hits to back eight strong innings of winning pitcher Renton Poole.

Just about all of IU Kokomo's eight hits were big ones as they resulted in 11 runs. Poole did his part giving up only three runs and five hits over 8.0 innings. He racked up nine strikeouts and only one walk.

It was a pitcher's duel between Poole and Rio Grande starter Zach Harvey for the first seven innings. IU Kokomo was up, 2-1, on Tavon Lindsay's clutch triple in the sixth. That scored Jared Heard from first. An inning later, Heard delivered a two-run double for a 4-1 lead.

Rio Grande did get within 4-3 on solo homers by Michael Rodriguez and Eli Daniels in the bottom of the seventh, but a seven-run eighth inning turned the game toward the Cougars in a big way. IU Kokomo batted around with the big hits being Max McKee's RBI base hit and Dalton Clarke's three-run triple. Clarke had two doubles and a triple, and his double way back in the fourth tied the game at 1-1.

Harvey pitched into the eighth inning and gave up five hits. He struck out six and walked five, one of which as intentional. Juan Cruz had three of Rio Grande's six hits with a 3-for-4 performance, which included two doubles and a run.
