Asbury's Thompson named RSC Male Athlete of the Year 2017-18
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- Asbury (Ky.) University men's basketball player Trenton Thompson has been named the 2017-18 River States Conference Male Athlete of the Year. The 6-6, junior forward from Cynthiana, Ky., had an impressive season as the RSC Men's Basketball Player of the Year and the second-leading scorer in all of NAIA Division II.
The RSC Male Athlete of the Year award is voted on by athletic directors in the conference. Each school nominates one candidate to be considered. The winner claims the honor as the top overall male athlete in the conference this year.
Thompson was named an NAIA Division II First Team All-American and All-RSC First Team. He ranked second in the country with a scoring average of 26.8 points per game, which was tops in the RSC. He also averaged 8.1 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game.
Thompson led the high-scoring Asbury offense shooting 53 percent from the floor and 41 percent from long range with 62 made treys on the year. The Eagles ranked second in the nation with 92.6 points per game.
Thompson led Asbury to the playoffs with a record of 17-12 overall and 10-8 RSC for third place in the RSC West Division. Thompson scored 37 points in an epic playoff game at WVU Tech, a 94-90 loss.
Thompson scored 30 or more points 10 times during the season. He also reached double figures in scoring in all 29 games and posted nine double-doubles.
