MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- Brescia (Ky.) University cross country and track and field team member Kyle Robinson was voted as the male recipient for the 2017-18 River States Conference Bill Melton Champion of Character Award. Robinson, from Henderson, Ky., and Henderson County High School, just finished up his junior year for the Bearcats.

The RSC Bill Melton Champion of Character Award annually selects one male and one female student-athlete in the conference who is recognized for excellence in academics, athletics and the embodiment of the NAIA Champions of Character values.

The award is modelled after the NAIA's Dr. Leroy Walker Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the national association. It is named for former RSC (then called KIAC) Commissioner Bill Melton, and it promotes and recognizes the core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship.

Nominated by their institution, candidates must be at least a junior with a 3.0+ GPA. Other considerations for the award are campus and community leadership, embracing the five core values and athletic achievement. The award was established in 2015-16.

Robinson is a three-year member of the Brescia cross country and track teams and a team captain. He has a 3.60 grade-point average majoring in English. Robinson is an NAIA-Daktronics Scholar-Athlete, a multi-year member of the RSC Scholar-Athlete Team and a multi-year winner of the RSC Champions of Character award for his sports.

Community service efforts conducted by Robinson include organizing a shoe drive on campus for those in need in Haiti. Team members collected athletic and dress shoes to be sent under the direction of Robinson. He has also been a volunteer at Cravens Elementary School working with students through the Junior Achievement program. On the Brescia campus, he is a resident assistant, student ambassador and tutor.

Athletically, Robinson is a two-year all-conference performer in the RSC. This past spring he earned All-RSC honors in outdoor track and field placing second in the 10,000 meters. He placed 19th at the RSC Cross Country Championship.
