Asbury (Ky.) fires program-record in final round to win RSC Fall Preview

RESULTS

FLORENCE, Ind. -- Asbury (Ky.) University used a program-record score of 309 in the final round to win first place at the River States Conference Women's Golf Fall Preview, which finished up Tuesday, Oct. 1 at Belterra Golf Course. The Eagles trailed the lead by two shots after Monday's first round, but they stormed their way to an 18-shot win with a big final day.

Midway (Ky.) University led after 18 holes and ended up in second place with rounds of 327 and 329. Asbury shot 329 the first day but then put three players in the 70s over the final 18 holes. IU Kokomo was in third place at the end of each day and carded rounds of 337-342. IU East (344-342) placed fourth of the seven schools that had team scores.

Brescia (Ky.) University, University of Rio Grande (Ohio) and Carlow (Pa.) University were in fifth through seventh place. Point Park (Pa.) University and Ohio Christian University were also represented at the 36-hole tournament with individual competitors.

Brandi Jones from IU Kokomo won medalist honors with rounds of 79 and 76. She was in a tie for third and one shot off the lead after 18 holes. But she came through with a 4-over 76 to win by two over the field.

Asbury knocked 20 strokes off its score from the first day led by Faith Willey and Jill Florence. Willey placed second with a big jump thanks to the best round of the tournament, a 72 in the final round. She was in 16th after an opening 85. Teammate Florence placed in a tie for third with rounds of 80 and 78.

Point Park's Joey Walz (79-79) and IU East's Joe Wisecup (78-80) earned a share of third place as well. Hannah McCrabb (82-77) was a part of Asbury's day-two charge to tie for sixth place with IU East's Lexie Fields (78-81), the first-round leader.

The Top 10 had two players from runner-up Midway with those being Sydnee Beard (80-80) in solo eighth and Hannah Scroggins (81-82) in a tie for ninth along with Point Park's Olivia Stawovy (79-84).

The RSC Women's Golf Fall Preview was a look at the players and the course prior to the RSC Women's Golf Championship April 20-21, 2020 back at Belterra Golf Course. The team champion there will automatically qualify for the NAIA National Championship in Oklahoma City.
