No. 24 IU Southeast falls short to No. 13 Georgetown (Ky.) in NAIA Opening Rd

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The IU Southeast baseball team fell 13-5 to No. 13 Georgetown in the loser's bracket final of the 2019 NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round.

IU Southeast (37-20) opened the scoring when Cody Maloon hit a two-run home run for his sixth home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning.

The Grenadiers tacked on another run in the second inning when Tyler Warmath singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error and Dalton Mitchell drove him in with a double.

But the Tigers (45-14) tied the game with a three-run third inning. Chris Gilbody started the rally with a solo home run. A RBI triple by Nick Giambalvo and a RBI single by Brandon Krennrich tied the contest.

Georgetown took the lead for the first time in the fourth inning. After a single by Tyler Wagner, an infield hit by Gilbody and a throwing error by third baseman Daniel Brescia allowed Wagner to score. Then Ryan Garner hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Gabriel Figueroa.

The Grenadiers scored one run each in the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game. In the fifth, Clay Woeste singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Then Tyler Mills drove him in with a double. In the sixth, Daunte Decello recorded a RBI double to score Warmath.

But in the ninth inning, the Tigers pulled away for good with a two-out, eight-run rally. Val Stammler was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Tyler Wagner was hit to break the tie. Figueroa reached on a walk and then Gaynor hit a two-run single. A three-run home run by Joseph Wall sealed the game for the Tigers.

Tyler Warmath went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in his final collegiate game. Tyler Mills added two hits.

IU Southeast concludes the season with four-straight NAIA Tournament appearances and five-straight seasons of 35 or more wins. The Grenadiers were the 2019 RSC regular season champions.
