Brescia's Alex Satterfield chosen as Bill Melton Champion of Character female recipient
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- Brescia (Ky.) University volleyball student-athlete Alex Satterfield has been chosen as the 2018-19 female recipient of the RSC Bill Melton Champion of Character Award. She was selected after the voting conducted by the RSC Champions of Character committee.
Satterfield was a senior on the Brescia volleyball team this past year. A setter for the Bearcats, she racked up 520 assists on the year to become the school's all-time career leader. She also carried a 4.00 grade-point average majoring in pre-law and psychology.
The RSC Bill Melton Champion of Character Award annually selects one male and one female student-athlete in the conference who is recognized for excellence in academics, athletics and the embodiment of the NAIA Champions of Character values.
The award is modelled after the NAIA's Dr. Leroy Walker Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the national association. It is named for former RSC (then called KIAC) Commissioner Bill Melton, and it promotes and recognizes the core values of the NAIA Champions of Character program: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Servant Leadership and Sportsmanship.
Nominated by their institution, candidates must be at least a junior with a 3.0+ GPA. Other considerations for the award are campus and community leadership, embracing the five core values and athletic achievement. The award was established in 2015-16.
Satterfield was very active of the Brescia campus as a student leader in addition to her academic and athletic impact. She was a volleyball team captain, president of the Psychology Club and a presenter at Brescia's Celebration of Excellence program.
Her extracurricular activities include being involved with Girls Incorporated, which organized a group of 30 at-risk girls to come to campus to explore their future options.
She is also involved in the issue of human trafficking as an advocate working with various organizations on the topic. Satterfield has completed internships at the United Nations in New York, the Phillipines and in Italy related to human trafficking issues around the world.
Satterfield is the second straight Brescia volleyball player to receive the female version of the Bill Melton Award. Courtney Reels was named in 2017-18. Brescia climbed to the top of the conference in recent years and qualified for its first-ever NAIA national tournament in the 2018 season.
Satterfield will have her name forwarded to the national level as the RSC's nominee for the NAIA Leroy Walker Award.
