River States Conference Men's Basketball Update: Jan. 23, 2020
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- River States Conference Men's Basketball is heating up as we hit the final stretch of the season coming up over the next month. The conference features several of the top teams in NAIA Division II men's basketball.
The following is an update on the games from earlier this week and looking ahead to a full upcoming slate of games this weekend. Here's what you need to know about RSC Men's Basketball.
A highlight of the games on Tuesday, Jan. 21 had IU East go on the road to defeat No. 12-ranked IU Kokomo, 83-79, in a matchup of RSC East & West Division leaders. The Red Wolves (13-9, 7-1 RSC) staked out to a 51-42 lead at halftime and had all five starters in double digits in the win led by Jehu Lafeullle with 24 points and 10 rebounds and Bishop Smith with 21 and five treys.
IU Kokomo (17-4, 6-1 RSC) mounted a run in the second half, but IU East held off the Cougars to hand the RSC West leaders their first conference loss of the year.
WVU Tech (12-7, 7-1 RSC) kept pace with IU East in the RSC East Division thanks to an overtime win at Alice Lloyd (Ky.), 88-85, on Tuesday. The Golden Bears have an earlier loss to IU East but kept in touch with the Red Wolves as both teams are 7-1 RSC to lead the division.
It was a big night for the RSC East on Tuesday with Rio Grande (Ohio) going to Asbury (Ky.) to make it a sweep for the East over the West on the night. The RedStorm won, 64-61, for the tough, road victory to improve to 10-12, 3-5 RSC.
As we head into the weekend, IU Kokomo leads the RSC West with (RV) IU Southeast right behind. The Grenadiers (12-6, 5-2 RSC) are receiving votes in the national poll to give the conference two teams mentioned in the NAIA Division II Top 25 rankings.
The weekend games have a full slate of RSC East-West crossover games beginning Thursday night with three games on the docket. There is one game on Friday, four more on Saturday and a final one on Sunday. A lot of teams had the mid-week schedule off of conference games with the crossover travel coming this weekend.
