River States Conference Women's Basketball Update: Jan. 23, 2020
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- River States Conference women's basketball is about to hit the final month of the season before playoffs. It's been a big week of action so far with a full list of conference showdowns coming up this weekend.
The following is an update on RSC women's basketball for this week. Here's what you need to know from around the league this week and entering four straight days of RSC hoops starting Thursday.
(RV) WVU Tech continues to push the pace as the RSC East Division leader and the overall conference leader at 8-0 RSC. The Golden Bears bumped their win streak to nine in a row and increased their record to 15-6 overall with Tuesday's road win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.), 67-58. The Golden Bears had sisters Brittney and Whittney Justice lead the way with 15 points each.
Rio Grande (Ohio) stayed within 2.0 games of WVU Tech and in second place in the RSC East with Tuesday's 103-93 shootout at Asbury (Ky.). The RedStorm (13-8, 6-2 RSC) rebounded from a loss to WVU Tech in the previous game, which had been for first-place honors.
IU East won on the road Tuesday, 79-77, at IU Kokomo for its second win in a row. The Red Wolves (4-4 RSC) got back to .500 in conference. Ohio Christian (14-6, 4-3 RSC) was off on Tuesday but is also within playoff position in the East.
Midway (Ky.) continues to lead the RSC West at 15-3 overall, 5-2 RSC. The Eagles were one of the several teams idle on Tuesday leading into a big weekend of RSC East-West travel for crossover games. Midway has won four in a row entering Thursday with a big matchup at WVU Tech pitting divional leaders.
IU Southeast (12-7, 4-3 RSC) and Asbury (Ky.) (15-6, 4-4 RSC) are in second and third place, respectively, in a tight RSC West race. The top three teams are separated by just 1.5 games. IU Southeast heads to Pittsburgh along with Brescia (Ky.) (6-15, 2-5 RSC) this weekend to take on Point Park (Pa.) (12-8, 2-4 RSC) and Carlow (Pa.) (7-12, 2-5 RSC).
IU Kokomo (10-9, 2-5 RSC) is off this weekend along with Asbury, but is the Cougars are one of the four teams currently in playoff position in the division.
Check the upcoming schedule in the right-hand menu for this weekend's games. RSC East-West crossover action begins Thursday night with three games. There's one game on Friday, four more on Saturday and a final one on Sunday. Live video and stats are scheduled for all nine games this weekend.
