RSC Volleyball Championship Quarterfinals Recap: IUK, IUE, IUS, Midway move on
The home teams won three of the four matches on Saturday, Nov. 14 in the RSC Volleyball Championship quarterfinals. The championship moved to campus host sites for every match this year due to COVID-19, and only one away team got through to the semifinals on Saturday.
No. 1 seeds IU Kokomo and IU East marched on as did No. 2 seed Midway (Ky.). IU Southeast, a No. 3 seed, made it three RSC West Division teams in the semifinals with the lone upset, a 3-0 road win at No. 2 WVU Tech.
IU Kokomo hosts IU Southeast while IU East hosts Midway (Ky.) in the RSC Championship semifinals. Both matches will be Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. with the winners moving on to the finals on Nov. 21.
IU KOKOMO 3, POINT PARK (PA.) 0
KOKOMO, Ind. -- The No. 1 seed Cougars remained unbeaten at 16-0 overall by hitting .333 in a sweep over No. 4 Point Park (Pa.). Erinn Adam put up 11 kills to lead a balanced attack, which also included nine kills from Lizzie Sokeland. IU Kokomo won the match, 25-18, 25-16, 25-17.
Macee Rudy collected 18 digs while Kaley Lyons passed out 23 assists to keep things moving for the Cougars. Point Park had Madison Sima and Kristy Lippert with seven kills each but could not keep up.
IU EAST 3, BRESCIA (KY.) 1
RICHMOND, Ind. -- No. 1 seed IU East improved to 12-0 by dispatching No. 4 Brescia (Ky.), 3-1. The match was tied, 1-1, but the Red Wolves came away with a 25-23 win in the third on their way to victory. IU East won the final two sets to take the match, 25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-17.
Lexi Gentry and Jessica Swimm were the big guns for IU East with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Hallie Holbrook added nine kills while setter Reece Shirley tallied a double-double of 38 assists and 14 digs. Brescia got 13 kills from Hannah Beitler and 10 kills and 15 digs from Joie Porter, but it wasn't enough.
MIDWAY (KY.) 3, RIO GRANDE (OHIO) 0
MIDWAY, Ky. -- Midway (Ky.) is now 17-6 overall after the No. 2 seed Eagles swept No. 3 Rio Grande (Ohio). In three close sets, Midway prevailed, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.
Kaylee Criswell hit .625 and put up 12 kills to lead Midway. Alysha Tullar added 11 kills, and Brooke Trompler had eight. Midway's defense had five players with at least five digs, including Mariana Rodriguez with a team-high eight. Jess Youse had a team-high 10 kills for the RedStorm with Macy Roell directing the offense with 25 assists.
IU SOUTHEAST 3, WVU TECH 0
BECKLEY, W.Va. -- No. 3 seed IU Southeast went on the road to beat No. 2 WVU Tech in the only upset of the day, 3-0. The Grenadiers got the key points to win each of the first two sets by two and then made it a sweep, 25-23, 26-24, 25-18.
IU Southeast held a 51-36 edge in kills with Emilee Organ getting 16 and Delaney Nichols 11. Organ hit .316 and also had a double-double with 12 digs. Kenna Burman led the team with 22 digs, and Hannah Sipe had 40 assists. Brooklyn Cook collected 11 kills and 13 digs for WVU Tech, which also got 19 digs from Ana Muniz Rocandio.
