RSC Women's Basketball Update Feb. 6: WVU Tech ranked No. 25 in the country
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- The River States Conference Women's Basketball Update for Feb. 6 is highlighted by WVU Tech moving into the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll this week. The Golden Bears are ranked No. 25 in the Feb. 5 with a record of 20-6 overall and a perfect 12-0 RSC.
WVU Tech has a 4.0-game lead over the rest of the conference with four games to go. That has moved the Golden Bears within one win of their own or one loss by one of the teams four games back to clinch the RSC regular season championship. With that brings an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Championship. That could come as soon as Saturday with WVU Tech hosting IU East.
WVU Tech won at Ohio Christian on Tuesday night to set up the clinching scenario. The Golden Bears have won 14 games in a row as one of the hottest teams in the country. WVU Tech has won 28 straight conference games dating back to last year when they were 16-1 RSC.
Midway (Ky.) University earned a 58-45 victory at IU Kokomo on Tuesday to bump its lead in the RSC West Division to 2.0 games. The Eagles are now 19-5 overall, 8-4 RSC to move within one victory of a 20-win season. IU Southeast (15-10, 6-6 RSC) beat Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Tuesday to remain in second place in the division. Asbury (Ky.) (17-9, 5-6 RSC) picked up a victory over Brescia this week to take ahold of third in the division, one spot ahead of IU Kokomo (12-11, 4-7 RSC) as the final playoff team at the moment.
University of Rio Grande (Ohio) remained in second place in the RSC East despite a tough loss of 87-80 at IU East this Tuesday. The RedStorm is 16-10, 8-4 RSC. That is 4.0 games back of WVU Tech but 1.5 games clear of the next team, Point Park (16-9, 6-5 RSC). Point Park has won four in a row, including a win over Carlow this week, to grab ahold of third in the division. Ohio Christian (16-9, 6-6 RSC) and IU East (8-18, 6-6 RSC) are tied for the final playoff spot on that side of the conference.
Saturday's slate of five games features a pair of RSC East clashes with Ohio Christian at Rio Grande and IU East at WVU Tech. Point Park goes to IU Kokomo for a cross-division matchup with RSC West teams battling it out with IU Southeast at Asbury and Brescia at Alice Lloyd.
