Point Park's Alyssa Campbell named RSC Female Athlete of the Year 2019-20
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- Point Park University track & field and cross country sophomore Alyssa Campbell has been selected as the 2019-20 River States Conference Female Athlete of the Year. Campbell, from New Brighton, Pa., was chosen after a vote of the athletic directors in the RSC.
As the RSC Female Athlete of the Year, Campbell was identified as the top women's athlete across all sports in 2019-20. Each school was permitted to nominate one individual for the award.
Campbell was top performer in two different RSC sports during the year. She won the RSC Women's Cross Country Championship in the fall and earned RSC Women's Indoor Track Athlete of the Year in the winter. The outdoor track & field season was called off due to COVID, but it was still a big year for Campbell.
Her first-place, RSC cross country finish came with a time of 18:46 in the 5K race. That won by 29 seconds and led Point Park to its third straight conference championship and NAIA nationals appearance as a team. Campbell went on to earn NAIA All-American honors at the national meet, the only RSC runner to do so.
Campbell was the women's indoor track MVP after leading Point Park to the RSC title for a third year in a row. She swept the distance events placing first in both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter races as well as running the anchor leg of the winning 4x800 relay team. Nationally, Campbell placed 14th in the NAIA in the mile with a time of 5:07 at the national meet. She was also a part of Point Park's national-qualifying distance-medley relay team that placed 11th in the country.
Campbell was a member of the 2019-20 RSC Scholar-Athlete Teams this year for cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field. She is a 4.00 GPA student majoring in advertisting and public relations.
