Midway (Ky.) hangs on for win over IU East at RSC Women's Golf Fall Preview
FINAL RESULTS
FLORENCE, Ind. -- Midway (Ky.) University hung on for a three-shot victory over Indiana University East at the River States Conference Women's Golf Fall Preview. That was after the Eagles shot 316 in final round on Tuesday. Midway had led by just one shot over the Red Wolves after Monday's opening 18 holes. The Eagles needed another solid round to stay ahead of IU East, which finished runner-up with a finishing round of 318.
There were nine teams at Belterra Golf Club this week to preview the RSC Championship in the spring. The conference championship will be held at the same course in the spring. This week also will also factor into the all-conference selections, of which there were many players who went out and shot good scores.
In the final team standings, Midway's two-day performance of 313-316 had edged out IU East at 314-318. Next in the standings were Oakland City (Ind.) University (340-334) and Ohio Valley (W.Va.) University (333-342), who finished third and fourth, respectively. Those two schools flipped flopped from the first to second round as one of the few changes in the order from the first day to the next.
Brescia (Ky.) University stayed in fifth place throughout, and Indiana University Kokomo was in sixth the whole way. The final three teams were University of Rio Grande (Ohio), St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College and Carlow (Pa.) University.
It was an all-out chase for the medalist title with seven players within three shots of the winning score. In the end, it was IU Kokomo's Brandi Jones who won the individual title at 9-over 153 for the tournament. She shot rounds of 75-78 as the only player to post two rounds in the 70s. She won by one shot over Midway's Jenna Lewis, who had led with an opening 73 but then shot 81 on Tuesday.
Three players shot 155 for the tournament and tied for third including Oakland City's Haylee Exline (75-80), Midway's Emile Hill (75-80) and IU East's Jo Wisecup (74-81). Anne Gillock from IU East and Ashley Offenberger from Ohio Valley were one shot back of that at 156.
Midway put four players in the top 10 to prove the difference. Bree Russell shot a final-round 76 to move up five spots into a tie for eighth. The Eagles also had Sydnee Beard tie for 10th.
