WVU Tech's Smith, Point Park's Jacobs pick up RSC Track & Field awards
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- WVU Tech senior Steven Smith and Point Park (Pa.) University sophomore Daniel Jacobs both qualified for nationals and claimed River States Conference Men's Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week for March 22-28.
Smith, a senior from Portland, Maine, posted the No. 1 time in the NAIA for the 5,000-meter race walk. He did so at the Montreat (N.C.) Invitational, where he won the event with a time of 20 minutes, 59 seconds. That mark is almost five minutes better than the NAIA minimum qualifying standard.
Jacobs, from Elizabeth, Pa., registered the No. 2-ranked javelin throw of the year at the Lock Haven Early Bird Open. His distance fo 65.53 meters won the event at the NCAA Division II meet and surpassed the NAIA minimum standard by more than 10 meters.
