Point Park (Pa.) wins RSC Women's Cross Country Championship 2022
RESULTS (WOMEN'S 5K)
KOKOMO, Ind. -- Point Park (Pa.) University won the team title at the 2022 River States Conference Women's Cross Country Championship held Saturday, Nov. 5 at Indiana University Kokomo. The Pioneers had a strong performance to earn their fifth conference title in the last eight years and the first one since 2019 when they won for the third time in a row.
Point Park had a team total of 44 points with runner-up St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College and third-place IU Kokomo next in line with 75 and 76 points, respectively. Point Park had three runners place in the Top 10 and seven in the Top 25 finishers overall to flood the leaderboard and keep the team point total strong.
Point Park senior Alyssa Campbell won the race individually with a time of 18:56 on the 5,000-meter course. It was her third RSC cross country individual championship to go along with 2019 and 2021. She was second to Anna Shields in 2018 as a freshman. Campbell was way out in front this year winning the race by 54 seconds to earn RSC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year honors.
Point Park also had Carlijn de Bie in sixth place and Jana Schmid in seventh place to earn all-conference first team. The Pioneers also had Emily Leo in 13th place for second-team all-conference.
With the win, Point Park earned the RSC automatic team qualification to the NAIA National Championship to be held Nov. 18 in Tallahassee, Fla. Point Park head coach Tim Creamer was voted RSC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year by his peers.
The top seven finishers overall earned All-RSC First Team honors with finishers eight through 14 getting All-RSC Second Team.
The top four individual finishers not from team champion Point Park qualified individually to go to NAIA nationals. Claiming those spots were Amarissa Kerns from Rio Grande (Ohio) in second place, Kayla Coryea from St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) in third place, Casey Lechner from IU Kokomo in fourth place and Olivia Cisco from Rio Grande (Ohio) in fifth place.
For her second-place finish, Amarissa Kerns earned RSC Women's Cross Country Newcomer of the Year. A freshman, she was the top finisher who is new to the conference.
The RSC Women's Cross Country Champions of Character Team was awarded. That featured one member from each team who best represents respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
The RSC Women's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete Team was also named with those having a 3.25 GPA or higher and at least two semester of attendance at their school prior to the current term.
