Point Park wins fifth straight RSC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championship

LOGAN, Ohio -- Point Park (Pa.) University made it five in a row with the 2021-22 River States Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday, Feb. 19 from the Chieftain Center. The Pioneers had 201 points to win the conference title for the fifth time in the five year history of the conference indoor championship.
Point Park also pulled in three of the four individual awards with senior Alyssa Campbell and junior Sophie Jebose as the top two points scorers in the meet for RSC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year and RSC Indoor Field Athlete of the Year honors, respectively. Point Park first-year head coach Tim Creamer was voted as the RSC Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College claimed runner-up team honors with 124 points. The Pomeroys were the women's cross country champions in the fall and continued to make an impact in their first year in the RSC.
Brescia (Ky.) University took third with 93.5 points, and University of Rio Grande (Ohio) was fourth with 81. There were 12 teams competing at the Chieftain Center, which hosted the championship for the second year in a row.
Campbell led the Pioneers to victory with a meet-high 34.50 points scored. She walked away with five medals, three of which were individual golds in the 800 meters, mile and 3,000 meters. She also anchored the Point Park 4x800 relay to clinch a meet record and ran a leg of the distance medley relay that placed second.
Jebose had 31.50 points for second in the meet. She was on the medal stand four times in field events. She won the triple jump, placed second in the long jump and weight throw and tied for third in the pole vault.
Carlow (Pa.) University freshman Molly Wagner made noise in the sprints to earn RSC Women's Indoor Track & Field Newcomer of the Year with 27.25 total points scored. She won the 60 meters and placed second in the 200 meters and 400 meters. Wagner also ran the last leg of the 4x400 relay team that finished fourth.
Creamer got RSC Coach of the Year with the Pioneers pulling in 14 all-conference placements combined in the 20 events on the day. The 201 points scored came within striking distance of the meet record for team points set by Point Park in 2020 with 212.
There were five RSC championship records surpassed on Saturday. Point Park had Emma Pavelek start off the meet with a record of 1.67 meters in the high jump.The Pioneers also had their 4x800 relay get a meet record of 10:18.32 beating their own previous mark by two seconds.
Brescia established two meet records with the first being Breanna Alderton with a time of 18:02.73 in the 5,000 meters. That crushed the previous mark of 18:24. The Bearcats also had Jordyn Cardwell set a record in the long jump at 5.39 meters, just beyond the previous distance of 5.36.
Midway had Alexia Schofield set the meet record in the 200 meters. She had a time of 26.06 to beat the earlier time of 26.33.
Those who set records and got individual awards were among the stars of the meet with Campbell scoring 34.50, Jebose with 31.50, Schofield with 29, Wagner with 27.25, Pavelek with 24.50, Alderton with 22 and Cardwell with 20.
The top three finishers in each event and relay earned All-River States Conference honors. The top eight placements in each event earned points for their teams in descending order: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Also named was the RSC Women's Indoor Track & Field Champions of Character Team. One individual from each school was nominated by their head coach for best displaying the NAIA's five character values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
