MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- The qualifiers and bracket for the 2021-22 River States Conference Women's Basketball Championship are all set, and they are announced here at RiverStatesConference.com. The eight-team championship will be held Feb. 23, 26 and March 1 at campus sites around the RSC.
The top four teams from each of the RSC East & West Divisions qualified for the RSC Championship. The bracket begins with quarterfinal matchups Feb. 23 in a crossover format with the semifinals Feb. 26 and the championship final March 1.
The championship qualifiers were the four teams in each division with the best record in games within their division. The records within divisional play were used instead of overall RSC record because not all teams were able to complete their crossover schedule due to COVID postponements. This way all teams have common opponents when it comes to playoff qualifiers in each division and that the choice of which games to makeup do not unfairly influence the postseason tournament.
No. 1 overall seed University of Rio Grande (Ohio) leads the championship bracket. The RedStorm is ranked No. 22 in the NAIA with a spectacular record of 28-2 overall, 16-1 RSC. Rio Grande has already clinched a bid to the NAIA National Championship as the RSC Regular Season Champion and is also the RSC East Division champ.
Rio Grande starts the playoffs hosting a quarterfinal matchup Feb. 23 versus IU Southeast (11-17), the No. 4 seed from the RSC West. The winner will move on to face the winner of the other quarterfinal game on that side of the bracket, which features Oakland City (Ind.) University (15-11), the No. 2 seed from the RSC West, hosting WVU Tech (15-15), the No. 3 seed from the RSC East.
No. 1 seed Midway (Ky.) University is the top seed on its half of the bracket as the RSC West Division champion. The Eagles are 23-6 overall, 15-2 RSC. Midway's quarterfinal home game Feb. 23 is versus the No. 4 seed from the RSC East Ohio Christian University (11-11). The winner faces whoever advances between quarterfinal host IU East (24-6), the No. 2 seed from the RSC East and Alice Lloyd (Ky.) College (18-8), the No. 3 seed from the RSC West.
Higher seeds will host each game of the championship all the way through to the finals. The RSC Championship winner will receive the conference's other automatic bid to the NAIA national tournament. If Rio Grande wins the postseason, Midway will earn the RSC's second national bid as RSC West champion.
