Day 1 Recap: IU East, Oakland City teams move on to RSC M+W Tennis Finals

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. - It'll be Indiana University East against Oakland City (Ind.) University for both the women's and women's title matches at the 2022 River States Conference Men's & Women's Tennis Championship being held at Top Seed Tennis Club.

The teams from IU East and Oakland City advanced to title match showdowns with semifinal victories on April 29.

The top-seeded IU East women will face the No. 2-seed Oakland City women at 9 a.m. on April 30 at Top Seed.

The men's match between the top-seeded Red Wolves and second-seeded Mighty Oaks will follow at approximately noon.

The women's semifinals were played outdoors in warm afternoon conditions. IU East defeated No. 5 seed Brescia University on the strength of straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Linda Marino rallied from 5-2 down in the first set at No. 1 singles to win a straight sets for the fourth Red Wolf point.

Oakland City defeated No. 3 seed Indiana University Kokomo with an impressive performance in doubles plus singles wins at the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Pamela Barbosa won in three sets at No. 5 singles to seal the win for the Mighty Oaks.

After late-afternoon showers, the action moved indoors for the tense men's semifinal matches. IU East needed clutch wins at several spots to hold off No. 4 seed Indiana University Southeast by a 4-2 score.

Oakland City won by an identical score against No. 3 seed Brescia University. Moises Goncalves won the clincher for IU East in three sets at No. 5 singles. Gustavo Marangoni sealed the win for Oakland City in three sets at No. 3 singles.

The morning quarterfinal round also saw some close matches. In the women's draw, Brescia upset No. 4 seed Midway by a 4-3 score on the strength of a three-set win from Kyla Dilger at No. 4 singles. IU Kokomo eliminated No. 6 seed IU Southeast by a 5-0 score in the other women's quarterfinal.

In the men's quarterfinals, IU Southeast held off No. 5 seed Midway by a 4-2 score. Brescia eliminated No. 6 seed Ohio Christian by a 4-0 margin.
