St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) wins automatic bid to the NAIA National Championship as RSC Championship winner. Rio Grande also advances to NAIA National Championship with automatic bid as RSC Regular Season Champion.


KOKOMO, Ind. -- The 2022 River States Conference Softball Championship is set for Thursday-Saturday, May 5-7 in Kokomo, Ind. There will be six teams descending upon Championship Park for a double-elimination tournament. It is the first year that the multi-field, turf-surfaced facility will host the conference championship.

Championship Park is located at 600 S. Goyser Road, Kokomo, IN 46901. More information at the facility website ChampionshipPark.org.

The top three teams from the RSC East & West Divisions qualified for the postseason. The team champion will receive automatic qualification to the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round to be played May 16-18 at host sites around the country.

No. 1 overall seed University of Rio Grande (Ohio) leads the bracket with a record of 37-11 overall, 22-2 RSC.The RedStorm won the RSC East Division and had the best conference record this year. Rio Grande will play its first game on Friday, May 6 at 12:00 p.m.

No. 2 overall seed St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College won the RSC West Division in its first year in the conference. The Pomeroys are 26-12 overall and a division-best 19-7 RSC. St. Mary-of-the-Woods has a bye into Friday at 12:00 p.m. as well.

The championship begins with two games on Thursday, May 5. The winners move on to face the division champions with the losers going to an elimination round Friday at 2:00 p.m.

IU Southeast (22-23, 16-10 RSC) is the No. 2 seed out of the RSC West and will play Point Park (Pa.) University (22-20, 13-13 RSC), the No. 3 seed from the RSC East, on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The winner will play Rio Grande in the next round.

Ohio Christian University (23-19, 18-8 RSC) is the No. 2 seed from the RSC East. The Trailblazers open up versus the No. 3 seed from the RSC West, Midway (Ky.) University (29-14, 16-10 RSC), on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. That winner will face SMWC in the next game.

Play continues Friday at 4:00 p.m. for the winner's bracket final and then again at 6:00 p.m. for another elimination game. Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. with just three teams remaining. The championship round is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. with another championship game if necessary 30 minutes following.

Rio Grande has already clinched an automatic bid to the NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round as RSC Regular Season Champion. If Rio Grande were to win the RSC Championship, the postseason tournament runner-up would earn the conference's second automatic bid to nationals.
