RSC Commissioner's Cup 2021-22 goes to Point Park (Pa.)
MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- A very tight race for the 2021-22 River States Conference Commissioner's All-Sports Cup had Point Park (Pa.) University retain the award by the slimest of margins. The Pioneers athletic department claimed the title in a tiebreaker over University of Rio Grande (Ohio).
Point Park and Rio Grande both totaled 65 points in the standings. The Pioneers edged out the RedStorm via the tiebreaker, which takes into account the number of first-place finishes. Point Park had four, and Rio Grande had three.
Indiana University East was very close by for third place just one point behind Point Park and Rio Grande with 64. The RSC rules dictate that the top five in the final standings are publicized with Midway (Ky.) University and Indiana University Kokomo rouding out this year's award listing with 61 points apiece.
Standings for the RSC Commissioner's All-Sports Cup take into account each school's finish in the RSC championship sports that it sponsors. The standings score the top seven sports from each school. Points are awarded on a scale of 10 with 10 points for first place in a sport, nine for second and so on. For sports that have more than 10 schools participating, no points are earned for schools finishing below 10th place. Standings are tabulated based on regular-season finish in the sports that have regular-season standings. For sports that do not have regular-season standings, the championship meet or tournament is used.
Point Park's four first-place finishes came in a sweep of the RSC men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field championships. The Pioneers also took second place in women's cross country and baseball. Point Park was fourth place in women's soccer and volleyball to round out its scoring.
Rio Grande claimed a first-place finish in each sports season taking home top points for men's soccer, women's basketball and softball. The RedStorm was second place in women's soccer and also men's indoor and outdoor track and field. Rio Grande was third place in women's outdoor track and field and men's cross country for more high finishes.
IU East had seven sports that were third place or better, just like Rio Grande. The Red Wolves swept the RSC championships in men's and women's tennis and also won first place in women's golf. IU East was runner-up in volleyball and men's golf and was top three in women's soccer and women's basketball.
Midway's 61 points featured first place in men's cross country and men's golf. The Eagles were second place in women's basketball and women's golf and also third in volleyball and men's indoor track and field. Midway took fourth in baseball.
IU Kokomo's 61 points included first place for volleyball and men's basketball. The Cougars were second place in men's cross country and third place in five different sports -- women's cross country, women's tennis, men's golf, men's outdoor track and field and baseball.
