IU East edges Rio Grande for RSC Men's Golf Fall Preview title
FINAL RESULTS
DANIELS, W.Va. -- Indiana University East edged University of Rio Grande (Ohio) on a playoff hole to win the River States Conference Men's Golf Fall Preview title. The 36-hole tournament was held Monday-Tuesday at The Resort at Glade Springs in Daniels, W.Va.
Rio Grande held a one-shot lead over IU East and Midway after Monday's first 18 holes. Rio Grande shot 307 in the final round, and IU East forged a tie with a final 306. With both Rio Grande and IU East tied at 608 through 36 holes, the tiebreaker was hole No. 1. The Red Wolves played that hole at even par whereas the RedStorm was 1-over.
The tournament came down to a playoff for medalist honors as well. Hayden Williamson from Indiana University Kokomo won the playoff with a par on No. 10. That edgeD Jack Bedell from Midway (Ky.). Williamson was leading after the first day with an even-par 72 with Bedell opening up with a 75. The second day had the players reverse scores to both end at 3-over 147.
Jake Miller placed solo third with rounds of 75 and 74 to lead IU East. Teammate Will Barnes was one spot back in a tie fourth after shooting 74-76. Rio Grande had Nicolas Gonzalez shoot 74-76 to get into the tie for fourth. Rio Grande's Rodrigo Portilla tied for sixth with 77-74.
WVU Tech placed third overall followed by IU Kokomo in fourth and Midway in fifth. Each of the top five teams in the standings had two players in the top eight and ties. That group of 12 players also included single players from Point Park (Pa.) and Oakland City (Ind.).
