Three-Peat: Midway (Ky.) wins third-straight RSC Men's Golf Championship

FLORENCE, Ind. -- Midway (Ky.) University secured its third-straight River States Conference Men's Golf Championship by shooting a tournament-best score of 290 in the final round on Tuesday from Belterra Golf Course. The Eagles turned their nine-shot lead after two rounds to a 28-shot win at the end of the 54-hole championship. 

With the win, the Eagles advance to the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship with the RSC's automatic bid. The national tournament is May 16-19 at Las Sendas Golf Club in Mesa, Arizona.

Midway had four players shoot 75 or better in the final round Tuesday to lock up the conference championship. Hayes Mason shot even-par 71 over the final 18 holes to lead Midway to the title and claim RSC medalist honors.

The Eagles had four players in the top four placements with ties for the tournament. That included Gage Gregory third overall with a 75 in the final round and also Jack Bedell and Camron Turner tied for fourth with big performances on the final day shooting 71 and 73, respectively, to push Midway to the finish. 

By leading his team to the third title in a row and he wire-to-wire victory, Midway head coach Otis Smith was named the Thomas Hackelroad RSC Men's Golf Coach of the Year.

Indiana University Kokomo shot its best round of 303 on Tuesday to move into runner-up honors. The Cougars had Harley Pugh and Drew Wagner both shoot 74 in the final round to earn Top-10 placements individually in a tie for ninth. 

Oakland City (Ind.) University also shot its best round over the final 18 holes to move up to a third-place finish. Kyle Honer led the way for the Mighty Oaks placing in the tie for fourth and earning RSC Men's Golf Newcomer of the Year.

Indiana University East placed fourth with RSC Men's Golfer of the Year Jake Miller pacing the Red Wolves. He was second overall this week and the top overall player in the conference this year when combined with the RSC Fall Preview. 

St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College moved up a spot to take to fifth, and University of Rio Grande (Ohio) moved up two spots on the final day to place sixth out of the 11 teams competing on the week. 

The All-RSC Men's Golf Teams were selected with six members on the All-RSC First Team and five on the All-RSC Second Team.

Also named was the RSC Champions of Character Team with one member from each school nominated by their head coach for best displaying the NAIA's five character values of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Finally, the RSC Men's Golf Scholar-Athlete Team was named with team members having a 3.25+ GPA and at their school for more than one semester. Midway took top honors there as well with six honorees followed by IU East with five.
