St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) claims RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship
FINAL RESULTS
RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- St. Mary-of-the-Woods (Ind.) College won the 2023 River States Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship title with its performance April 28-29 at the meet co-hosted by University of Rio Grande (Ohio) and Ohio Christian University.
The Pomeroys won their first RSC track & field title with 168 points to come away with a win over runner-up Point Park (Pa.) University by four points. The Pioneers had 164 with Rio Grande in third at 129. There were 11 teams competing in the women's championship.
St. Mary-of-the-Woods took home three of the big individual awards as well. Hope McGuire was named RSC Women's Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year after winning the 100 and 200 meters and being all-conference in the 4x100 (champs) and 4x400. Sierra Hurtado won RSC Women's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year as the conference champion in the hammer and shot put and second in the discus. Pomeroys head coach Zach Whitkanack was voted RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year.
Carlow (Pa.) University freshman Mya Greschner was named RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Newcomer of the Year. That was after winning the 400 meters, placing second in the long jump, third in the 200 meters and fourth in the 100 meters.
There were several women's records set during the two-day championship. Nevaeh Brown from Midway (Ky.) broke her own RSC record in the pole vault at 3.82 meters. Carmen Camino from WVU Tech set the record in the 3,000 Steeplechase running 11:26.59. Emma Byrum from Rio Grande is the new record holder in the javelin at 36.55 meters. Makala Pfefferkorn from IU Kokomo tie the meet record in the long jump at 5.58 meters.
There were two relay record set with St. Mary-of-the-Woods taking over in the 4x100 relay at 48.60 seconds and Rio Grande claiming the 4x400 record at 4:03.06.
Also named was the RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Champions of Character Team. That honored one member of each team who best displays the NAIA fiver character traits of respect, resposibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
The RSC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Scholar-Athlete Team recognized outstanding students with a 3.25+ GPA who have been at their current school for more than two semesters.
The top three finishers in each event and relay earned all-conference honors. The top eight placements in each event earned points for their team. Four entries per school, per event were allowed.
