RICHMOND, Ind. - In front of a rowdy crowd at Lingle Court, the Indiana University East volleyball team defeated the University of Rio Grande 25-23, 25-14, 23-25, 25-18 on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
With the River States Conference victory, the Red Wolves are 14-7 overall and 3-2 in the league. Rio Grande falls to 15-5, 4-1.
After winning the opening set, the Red Wolves took control in the second before they looked to sweep in the third. However, the RedStorm rallied to take the third after trailing 19-13 and finishing with a 12-4 edge.
The fourth set was tight in the early going, but the Red Wolves were able to pull away for their fourth straight victory.
Sheridan Phillips topped IU East with 17 kills, while Reece Shirley finished with 14 kills as Jessica Swimm added nine. Shirley and Aislyn Hogan each had 23 assists. Ella Bickel had 26 digs as Shirley contributed 12.
Summer Hendershot had four aces and 14 digs, while Amyra Lockett stuffed the RedStorm offense with eight blocks.
Next up for IU East is trip to WVU Tech on Friday, Oct. 4. The RSC affair gets underway at 5 p.m.
