Rio Grande and WVU Tech's Beaver compete in first round of NAIA Men's Golf National Championship

DALTON, Ga. -- Rio Grande (Ohio) and Bryson Beaver of WVU Tech took to the course on Tuesday (May 21) to represent the River States Conference in the opening round of the NAIA Men's Golf National Championship.

The 72nd annual event is being held at Dalton Golf and Country Club, a par-72, 7,043-yard course in Dalton, Georgia.

Beaver, who won medalist honors at the RSC Men's Golf Championship, was playing as an individual for the first time in his career, while Rio Grande, who won their first RSC Championship in program history, was making their first trip to nationals in program history.

Beaver put together a solid opening round including two birdies and 10 pars on his way to a 5-over 77 to put himself in a tie for 60th in the 156-player field.

In the team standings, the RedStorm fired a 32-over 320 in the first round as they sit in a tie for 26th. They sit 10-shots outside the cutline, while Keiser (Fla.) leads the 30-team field after firing a 3-over 291.

Alfonso Baro led the RedStorm with a 7-over 79, while Nicolas Gonzalez and Whit Byrd each fired an 8-over 80 in the first round.

Meanwhile, the duo of Rodrigo Portilla and Juan Carlos each carded a 9-over 81.

Following the second round on Wednesday, the field will be reduced to the top 15 teams (plus ties) and six individuals who have not already made the cut with their teams (plus ties).

Wednesday's second round is scheduled to get underway at 7:30 a.m. ET. The RedStorm will tee off No. 1 starting at 7:40 a.m. ET, while Beaver also goes off No. 1 at 9:30 a.m. ET.
