River States Players of the Week - February 17-23

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio - The River States Conference is pleased to announce the Player of the Week honorees for the past week.

All awards represent contests played from Monday, February 17 through Sunday, February 23.

Men's Basketball Players of the Week

Defensive Player of the Week
John Saenz, Brescia | Sr. - Guard - Palm Beach, Florida
Saenz was everywhere in the final two games of the season, leading the Bearcats to crucial wins over IU Southeast and Oakland City. The senior had 18 rebounds, 7 steals, and 3 blocks in the last two regular season games for the Bearcats, and posted a double-double in the Saturday win over Oakland City, finishing with 17 points and eleven rebounds.

Offensive Player of the Week
Greg Jenkins, St. Mary-of-the-Woods | Sr. - Guard - Indianapolis, Indiana
Jenkins averaged 24.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game as the Pomeroys defeated Oakland City and lost to IU-Kokomo. The senior tallied 31 points on 13-of-23 shooting in the home win over Oakland City, then posted 18 points against IU-Kokomo. He posted 15 assists in the two games, including eight against IU-Kokomo and seven versus Oakland City.

Women's Basketball Players of the Week

Defensive Player of the Week
Jasmine Jordan, Rio Grande | Fr. - Forward - Ashland, Kentucky
Jordan averaged almost 30 points per game in the final week of the regular season. The freshman forward has 29 points and eleven rebounds in a Tuesday win over Alice Lloyd, then helped the RedStorm hold off upset minded IU East with a gargantuan performance of 30 points and 19 rebounds on Saturday.

Offensive Player of the Week
Taylor Farris, IU East | So. - Guard - Oxford, Ohio
Taylor Farris averaged 29 points in IU East's two games this week and also broke a school-record with 10 steals against WVU Tech. Farris had 34 points and seven rebounds in a Tuesday win over WVU Tech, nearing a triple-double. She then made eight of her 12 field goals and finished with 24 points as IU East's upset attempt of Rio Grande fell just short.

Men's Volleyball Players of the Week

Attacker of the Week
Arthur Barreto, IU East | Jr. - Outside Hitter - San Paulo, Brazil
Barreto averaged more than four kills per set in IU East's first two River States Conference matches. The Brazilian led the way with 13 kills in Friday's sweep over Midway, then logged another 12 kills in three sets against Campbellsville. Barreto logged an attack percentage of .261 on the week.

Setter of the Week
Finn Heinemann, Georgetown | Sr. - Setter - Paderborn, Germany
Heinemann led the Georgetown offense from the setter position, leading the defending national champions to a 2-0 start in conference play. The German setter averaged more than ten assists per set on the week, logging 28 assists in a sweep over Rio Grande on Friday and adding 37 assists in a sweep over Oakland City on Saturday.

Defender of the Week
Joaquin Palacios, Brescia | Fr. - Middle Hitter - Rosario, Argentina
Joaquin Palacios was all over the floor in the Bearcats' first conference games. He had 15 kills on 36 total chances with 11 total blocks. The freshman's best game of the week was the conference opener against Oakland City, where he logged eight blocks, including three solo efforts. Palacios added another three blocks in the Saturday win over Rio Grande.

Baseball Players of the Week

Player of the Week
Wyatt Haupt, Shawnee State | Fr. - Infielder - Sardinia, Ohio
Haupt had the hot bat through Shawnee State's Sunday doubleheader against Aquinas (Mich.), going 5-for-7 with a home run, three RBI, four extra base hits and  five runs scored while posting an .OPS of 2.321. To add to his gaudy offensive numbers, Haupt ultimately collected 11 total bases in the doubleheader and didn't strike out one time in his seven official at-bats.

Pitcher of the Week
Robert Kelley, WVU Tech | Sr. - Pitcher - Vienna, Virginia
Kelley was dominant in his start against Bluefield State on Sunday, leading the Golden Bears to a 2-1 victory. The senior righthander did not allow an earned run across six innings of work, logging 12 strikeouts to just one walk. The senior allowed just one unearned run on five hits, picking up the victory on the mound.

Softball Players of the Week

Player of the Week
Zoe Smithson, Brescia | Jr. - Outfielder - Paducah, Kentucky
In the first series of the season, Smithson logged four hits in six at-bats over the weekend against a tough Cumberland team where she tallied a run, a double, two RBIs, and five total bases. Smithson went 3-for-3 in the opening game of the doubleheader, then added a single, a run scored, and a run batted in during a 8-6 victory in game two.

Pitcher of the Week
Savannah Jones, Brescia | Jr. - Pitcher - Bowling Green, Kentucky
Jones pitched efficiently out of the bullpen in Brescia's season opener against Cumberland on Saturday. The junior struck out four hitters across her four innings of work, surrendering just two runs to a Phoenix lineup that had scored five in the first two innings. Jones did not allow a run in three of her four innings of work, and did not walk a batter.
